Periodontal diseases affect your gums and bone supporting your teeth, and can cause inflammation, tooth loss, and bone damage. Periodontal diseases can be caused by:
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Stress
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Medications
- Diabetes
- Poor nutrition
Although there are many forms of periodontal disease, gingivitis is perhaps the mildest form. Gingivitis can cause your gums to bleed easily. However, there is little to no discomfort. Gingivitis can be reversed through a good oral hygiene regimen and dental treatments.
Another form of periodontal disease is chronic or aggressive periodontitis. As the name implies, aggressive periodontitis is by a rapid bone destruction and attachment loss in clinically healthy patients. Chronic periodontitis, on the other hand, is one of the most common forms of periodontal disease. Frequently seen in adults, the rate of disease progression is usually slow for chronic periodontitis. It is characterized by gum recession and pocket formation.
Periodontal surgery is recommended when nonsurgical treatment is ineffective. At Sumrall Dental Clinic, we perform pocket reduction, soft tissue grafts or bone regeneration to treat periodontal disease. If you’ve lost a tooth due to periodontal disease, our dentists will recommend dental implants.
To prevent periodontal disease, good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are important. In conjunction with through dental cleaning, daily brushing and flossing can keep your teeth healthy and strong.
